What a special treat! Baklava is usually so
expensive to buy, but now you can
make it at home and surprise your guests. We are grateful to Arsho Ararxian
for inspiring us to share this recipe.
Syrup Ingredients:
1 cup sugar
1 T lemon juice
½ cup water
½ cup honey
Baklava ingredients:
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp nutmeg
¼ cup sugar
8 ounces “filo” pastry (about 20 sheets)
1 stick of butter, melted
1 2oz package Flanigan Farms Pistachio Meats, chopped
2 4oz packages Flanigan Farms Chopped Walnuts
Combine and mix syrup
ingredients. Bring to boil for about 12 minutes to thicken.
Set aside to cool while you make the baklava.
Pre-heat oven to
350ºF.
Butter sides and bottom of 12” X 8” oven dish.
Prepare the filling: Combine and mix chopped pistachios, walnuts, ¼ cup sugar,
nutmeg and cinnamon.
Split filo into two
even layers. Place 5 layers in oven dish. Brush a thin layer of melted butter
on top and spread
1/3 of the filling on top. Add another 5 layers, brushing butter on each.
Spread another 1/3 of filling on top.
Repeat with another 5 layers of filo. Spread the rest of the filling on top,
then add the final 5 layers of filo,
brushing butter as you go. Cut into diamond shapes. Put in oven and bake for
about 50 minutes or until golden.
Remove baklava from oven and, while still hot, pour the syrup evenly over the
baklava.
