Peanuts

Actually a "bean" or legume, peanuts grow underground on the roots of the plant. The flavorful "Virginia" peanut is a rather long nut grown in southeastern United States.  Other varieties are the "Runner", a fatter round nut, second best, and the small Spanish peanut grown in Africa. To aid the depressed economy of the South, George Washington Carver developed over 300 uses for the peanut in the early 1900's. It has been a favorite ever since.
